Construction Kicks-Off at Creagan Cottage

, Subject : Design

On Site Start, Creagan Cottage, Isle of TireeWork has started on-site at Creagan Cottage on the Isle of Tiree. The project, to renovate and extend a traditional blackhouse, is Roots Design Workshop’s largest project to get built to-date.

Roots Design Workshop Director Micheal explained that ‘It’s always exciting when work starts on-site and this is no exception.  The old stone walls in the existing cottage were in good condition but the floor, roof and internal partitions were ruined and need to be completely replaced.  We believe that despite these significant alterations we can still retain the essence about what makes a traditional Tiree blackhouse special.’

Chris, Micheal’s fellow Director, went on to explain that ‘We’ve spent a long time designing things like way the roof and walls meet, to ensure we have a construction which meets modern standards and energy-performance targets without looking alien next to the old original building.  There are a few modern features, like a lean-to extension with large windows over-looking the sea.  We hope that this combination of old and new will make the finished project pretty special.’

Work on the project is expected to continue for the rest of 2012 and is due to finish in early 2013.
