An Cridhe, Isle of CollRoots Design Workshop visited the recently-completed An Cridhe community centre on the Isle of Coll.

The building was designed by Anderson Bell Christie Architects (ABC) for Development Coll and was of particular interest to Roots Design Workshop Director Micheal. He explained, ‘I worked on this project in it’s early stages when I was employed at ABC – by participating in the competition-winning presentation and then developing the early design ideas and the original Planning Approval. During this process I visited Coll on several occasions for meetings and workshops – it was clear then that this was a community who were passionate about building a new hall which would be useful for generations to come.  Although some parts of the design changed after I left it was still wonderful to see that the finished building had been delivered to such a high standard; Development Coll and ABC did a really good job.’

The project, which features a large main hall, multi-functional rooms, an airy serving area, exhibition space and a 14-bed bunkhouse, was opened in July 2012 by HRH Princess Anne.  The launch festival included several concerts and family events, with a ceilidh by Tiree-band Trail West on the last night.  Micheal, who attended, commented that ‘It was a real pleasure to be able to see An Cridhe in action having spent a great number of hours drawing this project and wondering what it would feel like.  There’s no better way to test the sprung dance floor and acoustic ceiling than a rip-storming Strip the Willow!’

Roots Design Workshop would like to congratulate all those involved in making this project a reality.
