We believe our role as rural architects is centred around helping the Client realise their ambitions for their project. We try to speak in a plain, jargon-free language and use accessible drawings and models to explain our ideas. We judge a project objectively and on first principles, always acknowledging the local natural and human contexts.
Our award-winning sustainable architecture studio is run by a small and talented team. Between us we have a complementary and wide ranging set of expertise, as well as extensive experience of working in rural and remote environments. This gives our studio a skill base beyond that of a normal architecture practice. We have an informal and open team ethic which allows all team members to input into all strategic and design decisions.
Roots Design Workshop was formed during an architectural Masters course at University in the summer of 2009. Instead of working on a detailed building design in the University studio the project team set-up a hypothetical business. We gave ourselves the aim of challenging how professional and sustainable architecture services could be delivered to remote and isolated communities. Either it would fail, which would lead to interesting academic conclusions, or it would succeed, and upon graduating we would have something to build on. Roots Design Workshop Ltd is now an award-winning sustainable architecture studio that continues to grow year on year.
