Roots Design Workshop are working with the Iona Community to investigate ways to renovate the inside of the accommodation facilities in Iona Abbey.  This once-in-a-generation project attempts to improve the sustainability credentials of the original building, make significant portions wheelchair-accessible and celebrate historical features which have been hidden by previous renovation projects.

Tiree Boathouse

Roots Design Workshop were part of the team who delivered a community-owned Boathouse on the Isle of Tiree. The project was led by Tog Studio, who hosted a live-build summer school. This meant the Boathouse was built by architecture and engineering students who wanted to gain first-hand experience of building a real project. The Boathouse was built during two week-long summer schools.

The Glebe Field

Roots Design Workshop were appointed by a local community group in early 2012 to design 5 new affordable housing units for local residents on the Isle of Iona. The design responds to traditional rural architecture and the architecture of its time, and is respectful of its natural and built surroundings whilst representing the continued and ongoing development of the community.

Dobhran Cottage

Roots Design Workshop were approached by the Clients at our workshop in Inverness in August 2010.  They wanted to explore ways of turning a dilapidated cottage they owned on the Isle of Mull (shown opposite) into a 1 bed holiday-home.  The key challenge was to provide the necessary accommodation in the small footprint.

The Old Schoolhouse

Sitooterie – Tog Studio 2013

The project started when Tog Studio was contacted by the Salvation Army and asked to help them deliver an outside space (a Sitooterie) for the residents at their Ashbrook LifeHouse in Edinburgh.  As part of the Tog Studio Team, Roots Design Workshop Director’s Chris and Micheal helped design the structure and deliver the ‘live-build’ that saw it constructed.

The Lighthouse – Tog Studio 2012

Tog is a Gaelic word meaning many things in varying contexts. It can be used to describe hoisting the sails of a boat (tog na siùil), the way the weather will improve (togaidh an latha) or to sing a song (tog fonn). It also means to ‘build’, ‘raise’, ‘educate’ and ‘excite’. This was the ambition behind tog studio; a new live-build summer school.

This sustainable architecture project presented an exciting challenge, to restore and develop a Grade B listed thatched terrace which consists of a Cottage, Byre and Barn. This arrangement and the method of construction (the thatched roof, thick stone walls, small openings and hard earth floor) represent the traditional style and development of domestic structures on Tiree.

Cruachan Blackhouse

Roots Design Workshop have been employed to manage the restoration of a dilapidated Blackhouse. The building (shown opposite) was a constructed in the traditional way for Tiree; built by hand from local materials, with two layers of stone either side of a sand cavity, with a simple timber and felt roof recessed on the wall head.
