Roots Design Workshop were approached by the Clients at our workshop in Inverness in August 2010. They wanted to explore ways of turning a dilapidated cottage they owned on the Isle of Mull (shown opposite) into a 1 bed holiday-home. The key challenge was to provide the necessary accommodation in the small footprint.
The work included a new roof and floor and upgrading of the stone work. A new entrance porch acts as a Lobby and to provide additional storage space. The cottage has a traditional 3 room internal layout but it was decided to have a more open interior to suit modern standards of access and lifestyle.
The Bathroom and Kitchen are accommodated at one end of the cottage while a double Bedroom is placed on a mezzanine above the service spaces and accessed by a spiral staircase. The only significant alteration to the existing fabric will be to open up a portion of the rear (north) wall to provide access to a new decked area through a glazed screen. The new roof has an open ceiling to create a light, open, contemporary interior.
Dobhran Cottage is now available as a holiday cottage with www.isleofmullcottages.com – a holiday letting agency based on the Isle of Mull with a range of self catering cottages throughout the island. All photos by Isle of Mull Cottages.
‘We initially met Chris & Michael at the Housing Expo Exhibition in Inverness in 2010. We had a building that was in a derelict state which we wanted to make into holiday accommodation but keeping the traditional exterior and footprint but making the interior the real wow factor. Michael & Chris came up with some fantastic ideas and we went with one of those. Roots Design Workshop helped us put together a very strong application not only for Planning but also for the SRDP Grant application that we were also putting in for. We have found Roots Design Workshop to always be clear and up front, there have been no financial surprises and all in all we have found the whole process stressless and seamless.’
