This project presented us with an exciting opportunity; to work on a traditional Blackhouse. The brief was to restore the ruined building into a modern one bed dwelling. The final layout was to be flexible enough to function as a private home and a rent-able property.

In our solution the stone walls were to be repaired and left exposed internally and externally.  With the Client we then decided the appropriate approach was to use modern materials in the restoration of the roof and windows.  This was to improve the building’s environmental performance and to honestly represent that the work was completed using materials and techniques of the time.

Internally, we installed a small service pod which contained all the functions the dwelling required.  Standing independently it was designed to appear as a large piece of well crafted furniture and create a flow of light and space around the interior.
