Roots Design Workshop were invited to suggest design options for a new house extension. The Clients wanted to create an alternative living space to those in their cottage. In particular, they wanted more natural light within and greater views to the landscape.
They were also enthusiastic about using a more contemporary style, while respecting the cottage. We decided to acknowledge the existing porch’s form and use of materials, but create a contemporary version.
The proposal therefore has a series of wall and roof planes that slide past and over one another. This creates an internal space with large openings and no fixed boundary. The openings permit natural light to flood into the space and offer uninhibited views to 3 points of the compass. A series of external rolling shutters were introduced as part of the project’s environmental strategy. They allow the client to control the space, adapting it to the external climatic conditions.
GIA Design Award Nomination 2012 – ‘Small Works’
‘We are more than satisfied with the work undertaken by the Roots Design Workshop Directors, Christopher Hall and Micheal Holliday. From initial conceptual ideas and sketches, to full planning consents, building warrant, tendering and project management, the Directors have demonstrated a meticulous attention to detail, extremely effective communication skills, and above all, a keen awareness and appreciation for our requirements as their clients. The completed project is everything that we hoped for, and fully mirrors the initial draft sketches and drawings.
We have found that Roots Design Workshop are particularly skilled in negotiations with planning and building control officers, which was very important to us, because of the potential problems that we may have encountered while negotiating a contemporary extension to our traditional dwelling.
We would thoroughly and without hesitation recommend Roots to any organisation or individual looking for practical, high quality architectural advice.’
