After meeting the Client at a timber construction workshop, Roots Design Workshop was appointed to produce designs for a new Studio Workshop at his home in Cambridge.
The site is in the back garden of a terraced property, adjacent to a mews parking court. The Team faced the challenge of designing a building with a flexible light interior on a tight narrow site in a way such that it could be easily constructed by the Client himself.
In close consultation with the Client, the solution was for a 2 storey building, rectangular in plan, with a dual pitched roof, a profiled sheeting finish externally, and a sheet timber finish internally. To provide the necessary space internally and for the rest of the garden, the building occupies the full width of the site and is placed at its far end.
The ground floor contains space for a vehicle with worktops to the rear, while the first floor contains a Wetroom, Kitchenette and a Studio space. The first floor is open to the roof apex, which in combination with a series of rooflights, creates a bright, light space. Light tubes are also proposed to bring natural light to the ground floor where being tight onto 2 neighbouring boundaries no windows are included on the long sides. A solar thermal hot water system, a solid fuel stove on the first floor, and a rational ‘first principles’ construction design contribute to this being a sustainable design. A contemporary oriel window on the gabled west elevation mimicks the parallelogram geometry of the site, tying the building to it.
The Team believe that they have created a design that is equally practical and beautiful.
