- Private Commission
- Isle of Tiree
- Completed June 2014
Roots Design Workshop was introduced to the Client as part of the RIBA / Shelter scheme ‘Architects in the House’. They wanted additional living space in their cottage in the small township of Vaul on the Isle of Tiree. The Team were appointed to design a solution and manage the project through the Planning and Warrant applications.
The solution was to knock-through the southern gable of the existing cottage and build a new extension. The new building acknowledged the form, scale and materiality of the existing cottage, and was placed in-line with it to form a terrace; a traditional way of extending buildings on the Isle of Tiree. The extension reflects its contemporary construction, with thin walls and flush eaves, which contrasts the traditional construction of the cottage.
Internally, on the ground floor the knock-through will become the new Kitchen. This space will open directly onto the extension, which is a single open space containing the Living and Dining spaces. The Living space is double-height in-part and contains a solid fuel stove and a double glazed doors into the garden. A new master bedroom on the first floor of the extension and a new Bathroom in the cottage completes the new accommodation. This turns the existing cottage from a 2 bed to a 3 bed, and adds 30m2 of living areas.
The Team then engaged in pre-application consultation with the local Planning and Building Standards Authorities, which culminated in successful applications to both departments.
