The Clients came to us with a challenging brief. They wanted us to develop solutions to update their existing cottage into a modern family home. They required additional sleeping, living, dining and storage spaces for a growing family. However, the building offered little flexibility and the site is small with a significant slope.
The site also has a prominent position within the local township, so it was important to ensure the design complemented its surroundings. Our design was to first integrate a series of utilitarian extensions around the original cottage. These also served to upgrade its thermal performance.
The main extension copied the existing cottage’s shape and materiality to create a mirror form and contained a new open plan Living, Dining and Kitchen space. Following a study of local settlement patterns, the main extension was formed along the same orientation as the original cottage but was offset. This created a series of sheltered landscaped spaces that help tie the building to its site.
