- Community & Tog Studio Live-Build
- Isle of Tiree
- June 2013 - June 2014
Roots Design Workshop were part of the team who delivered a community-owned Boathouse on the Isle of Tiree. The project was led by Tog Studio, who hosted a live-build summer school. This meant the Boathouse was built by architecture and engineering students who wanted to gain first-hand experience of building a real project. The Boathouse was built during two week-long summer schools.
It was important that the project didn’t just look like a big shed but rather a boathouse from the Isle of Tiree. The primary design move to achieve this is the curved frame and ridge; externally this references the traditional Tiree black-top roof whilst internally the structure was imagined as an upturned boat. The ply box portal frame was prefabricated by MAKLab. The structure was clad with vertical board-on-board larch and profiled roof sheeting.
More details about this project, including a film, can be seen at the Tog Studio website.
